St. Joseph ’s Food Pantry is a client choice food pantry that is truly dedicated to maintaining the dignity of the people it serves. ‘Guests’ come to the ‘market’ once a month to select the items that best suits their needs, and if they can’t come to the ‘market’, the ‘Moving Market’ comes to them. Its outreach delivery program provides two bags of groceries and household items to more than 144 elderly, disabled and disadvantaged North Shore residents each and every month. Its Little Lambs Baby Program provides food, diapers, wipes, and other supplies of more than four hundred children in any given month and its Youth Summer Meal Program provides lunch and organizes field trips for more than 150 Salem area youths in June, July, August and early September. St. Joseph’s Food Pantry runs Holiday programs for children as well as special holiday meals for families, an art program for 9-12 year olds, emergency housing, pharmacy help, and some aid for utility bills.
In all St. Joseph’s Food Pantry serves and average of 2,285 clients and distributes over 3500 bags of food per month. St. Joseph’s Food Pantry has also met the challenge posed by the closure of its host site in 2004 by relocating its food pantry to the Immaculate Conception Church to ensure its clients continue to receive much needed services and the recovery from a devastating robbery in April of 2006.
In 2004, St. Joseph’s Food Pantry received the prestigious ‘Partner of the Year Award’ from the Greater Boston Food Bank.
“Although, their location has changed, their commitment and name remain the same. Keeping the St. Joseph’s name signifies to the volunteers and clients of the pantry a long standing pledge of service to the North Shore community.”
- Catherine D’Amato, President, Greater Boston Food Bank
